With the huge offering of various TV screen sizes today, how can you find the right one for your room? TVs are measured in inches, but what does that actually mean for the width and height of the device? In this article, you will find a complete table of all common inch sizes, advice on how to measure tv sizes, as well as a simple guide on how to choose the right flat screen size for an optimal viewing experience.
The inch specification of a TV always refers to the screen diagonal, which is the measurement from the bottom-left to the top-right corner of the display. The width and height of the visible image are correspondingly smaller. In addition, the bezel and stand further increase the overall dimensions of the device. Therefore, always check the full device measurements in the manufacturer's specifications before purchasing.
Another point that is often underestimated when comparing sizes: screen area grows disproportionately relative to the inch number. A 75-inch TV does not offer around 15 percent more screen area than a 65-inch model. It offers around 32 percent more. Even a jump of just one size class to the next makes a clearly noticeable difference in a living room.
In the table below, you will find the screen diagonal and screen area of the most common inch sizes at a glance. All figures apply to displays with a 16:9 aspect ratio, excluding bezel and stand.
The most important question before buying is not which TV you like, but where you will be sitting. The distance between your sofa, bed, or dining table and the planned position of the TV largely determines which inch size makes sense for you. Sitting too close to a large screen strains your eyes. Sitting too far from a small screen means losing detail.
Resolution also influences the optimal TV size: the higher it is, the closer you can sit without the image looking pixelated. Once you know your viewing distance, you can calculate the right TV size for each resolution as follows:
With a viewing distance of 250 cm and a 4K TV, this gives: 250 ÷ 1.5 ÷ 2.54 = approximately 65 inches. All figures are guidelines. Personal preference also plays a role.

The further you are from your TV, the harder it can be to read subtitles or spot fine details. However, if you are too close to a large screen, details can disappear from your peripheral vision. As a rule of thumb: the image should comfortably fill your field of view without needing to move your head. Different size categories are recommended depending on the room:
In the UK, 4 screen sizes are especially popular when buying a new TV: 32", 43", 55", and 65". They cover the most common living room situations and are available in the widest range of models from nearly all manufacturers.
A 55-inch TV is the most versatile size. It fits most living rooms but also is a good TV size for the bedroom. 65 inches has established itself as the living room standard; at a typical sofa distance of 2.5 to 3.5 metres with 4K resolution, this size delivers a compelling experience. 75 inches is the first choice for anyone aiming for a true home cinema feel. The large screen area makes a clearly noticeable difference and suits living rooms with sufficient depth.
Vogel’s offers wall mount solutions for all television inch-sizes:
Will your new TV go on a TV cabinet or a TV stand? Or will you mount it on the wall with a TV wall mount? Wall mounting offers many advantages. If you want to watch TV from different spots in the room, a swivelling TV wall mount is a fantastic solution. It saves space and lets you easily rotate the screen to avoid reflections. Wall mounts are available for TVs of every size and with various features.
The centre of the screen should be at eye level when you are sitting comfortably on the sofa. In most living rooms, that means approximately 100 to 150 centimetres from the floor to the screen centre. If the TV hangs too high, it will cause neck strain over time. A tiltable wall mount can help counteract this.

With a viewing distance of 300 cm and a 4K TV: 300 ÷ 1.5 ÷ 2.54 = approximately 79 inches. In practice, a 75-inch 4K TV is the most common choice and an excellent option for this distance.
For lower resolutions:
At 400 cm viewing distance and 4K resolution: 400 ÷ 1.5 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 105 inches. Those not wanting a device of that size can opt for an 85- or 98-inch TV and still be in a comfortable range.
For lower resolutions:
Optimal size does not depend on viewing distance alone. Resolution, display technology, and viewing angle all play a role. A 4K or 8K device allows you to sit closer to the screen without the image looking pixelated, which means that at the same distance, you can choose a larger size. Modern display technologies such as OLED and QLED also offer wider viewing angles and natural colours, making seating position more flexible. Ultimately, personal perception is decisive: whatever feels comfortable is the right choice.
