Finding the perfect viewing distance is easier than you might think. The two most important factors are your TV's screen size and its resolution. A sharper picture means you can sit closer without any strain on your eyes. In this article, we cover everything you need to work out the ideal distance for your setup, whether you want to calculate it by yourself or simply find your TV size in the table.
The starting point is always the screen diagonal. Convert your TV's inch measurement to centimetres by multiplying by 2.54, then apply the correct factor for your display type. For HD TVs, multiply by 2.5. OLED screens allow a shorter distance, so use 1.7. With a 4K UHD TV you can sit even closer, using a factor of 1.5.
The table below shows the recommended distances for the most common TV sizes. Click here to find a suitable TV mount.

The right viewing distance comes down to three main things: resolution, screen size and viewing angle. Higher resolutions like 4K or 8K let you sit closer without the picture looking pixelated, while larger screens need more distance so you can comfortably take in the whole image. Modern panel technologies like OLED and QLED add to that flexibility with wider viewing angles and better colour accuracy. Personal preference plays a role too, of course.
Before buying a new TV, take the time to properly measure your room and think about where the screen will go. Consider the distance to your sofa, armchair or bed, and in smaller spaces, a more compact TV will often give you a far better viewing experience than going for the largest screen available. It is also worth deciding upfront whether you want a fixed wall mount, a swivelling bracket or a freestanding stand, as this will affect how much flexibility you have when dialling in the perfect position.
Both sizes are among the most popular on the market. A 55 inch TV is a great fit for most living rooms, offering a generous picture without needing a huge amount of space. Depending on resolution, the recommended viewing distance is around 349 cm for HD, 238 cm for OLED and 210 cm for 4K UHD.
A 65 inch TV delivers a noticeably larger image and is hard to beat for film nights on the sofa. We'd recommend choosing a higher resolution if you can, so you don't need to sit too far back to enjoy it comfortably. The ideal viewing distance for a 65 inch TV is roughly 413 cm for HD, 281 cm for OLED and 248 cm for 4K UHD.
With the innovative TV mounts from Vogel's, you can position your TV flexibly and adjust the distance to suit your individual needs.
Whether swivelling, tilting or fully movable - Vogel's offers a variety of mounting solutions that allow you to achieve the ideal viewing distance and angle in any room.
If you treat yourself to a large television, you want to present the set in the best possible light. TV stands, which can be positioned anywhere in the room, offer a particularly high degree of flexibility when it comes to positioning the TV at variable distances.
Wall mounts, on the other hand, take up less space, allowing you to mount your device flat on the wall like a painting or to be more flexible in its orientation with a swivelling and rotating mount.
In addition to the distance, the optimum angle at which the screen is viewed is also important. If you mount a large television on the wall, you may find it uncomfortable to look at the picture at an angle.
Depending on the quality and technology of the TV, the display of (dark) colours may suffer if the viewing angle is too oblique. Tilting and swivelling wall mounts are a good choice for changing the angle of your TV.
A particularly convenient option is electrically swivelling brackets, which allow you to set the optimum position at the right distance and angle without having to get up.

The ideal viewing distance depends on the TV size and resolution—larger screens require more distance, but higher resolutions like 4K or OLED allow you to sit closer without losing picture quality.
Using a flexible TV wall mount—like one that tilts, swivels, or is fully movable—lets you adjust the TV to the best distance and viewing angle for your room and seating setup.
For an HD TV, the ideal viewing distance is depending on the screen size. For a 55 inch TV it is recommended approx. 349 cm.
Thanks to the higher resolution of 4K UHD TVs, you can sit much closer compared to HD TVs.
For a 65-inch 4K TV, the optimal viewing distance is around 248 cm.
The ideal distance for an OLED TV depends on the screen size, but it’s generally closer than for HD TVs and similar to 4K TVs. For example, for a 75-inch OLED TV, the recommended viewing distance is about 324 cm.
At a viewing distance of 3 metres, the following screen sizes work well:
