There is no universal ideal height for a TV bracket. TVs come in different sizes, and everyone has their own preferred position for watching. Some people like to sit upright, while others prefer lying down to watch TV. As a general rule: to determine the ideal height for your television, start with your eye level. For example, if you’re sitting on the couch, make sure the centre of the screen is at eye level.
In this article, we’ll show you how to find the optimal height for your TV and how to adjust its position using different types of wall mounts. We’ll also give you tips for different rooms and show you how to find the right height for common TV sizes—for example, a 55-inch or 65-inch set.
The optimal height of the television is at eye level or slightly below when you are sitting down. This is usually between 105 and 152 cm from the floor. The ideal height depends on several factors. This includes the size of the television, the viewing distance and the size of the room.
Mounting your TV at the correct height can help prevent neck strain and promote better posture. If the TV is mounted too high or too low, you’ll need to tilt your head up or down while watching. This can lead to fatigue in the neck and eyes over time.
Install the TV so that the centre of the screen aligns with your eye level when seated. The exact height will depend on how high you sit—whether on a sofa, a chair, or something else. Generally, 55-inch TVs are mounted at a height of about 100 to 110 cm from the floor.
For a larger screen like a 65-inch TV, the same basic rule applies: for comfortable viewing, position the centre of the screen at or just above seated eye level. This usually translates to a height of about 100 to 120 cm from the floor.
The ideal height for a 75- or 77-inch TV also aligns with seated eye level. Your gaze should be aimed at the centre or lower third of the screen. Depending on your seating position and height, this typically means a mounting height of around 120 to 140 cm.
Mounting your television on the wall has many advantages! It saves space and allows you to adjust the viewing angle depending on the type of mount you use.
A swivelling TV mount is a great choice. It lets you watch comfortably from different spots in the room and helps minimise distracting reflections. This way, you get not only the optimal height but also the perfect tilt for your TV.
Do you want to hang your TV higher up on the wall? This might be a good idea in places like the kitchen, bedroom, or above a fireplace.
In that case, choose a wall mount with a tilt function. This lets you angle the TV for a comfortable viewing position. For example, in a bedroom, this allows you to mount the TV at the right height without losing space.
In the living room, you're most likely watching TV while seated. Measure your eye level while sitting in your favourite armchair or on the sofa. Maybe you also like lying down to watch TV sometimes. Brackets with a tilt function are also a flexible solution here.
If you watch television from different positions in the room? For instance on your couch but also sitting at the dining table, a full motion TV wall mount is the best solution. The eye level of your couch will also be a perfect height all through the room.
Once you’ve mounted your television at the optimal height, you probably don’t want to be distracted by visible cables. There are several ways to deal with this issue — for example, you can hide the cables inside the wall.
There are also stylish cable channels you can use to conceal them behind the TV. The simplest option is to use a TV mount with built-in cable management.
Depending on the size of your TV, the weight can vary significantly. The wall mount must be able to support this weight. Product descriptions usually indicate what screen size and weight a mount is designed for.
But it’s not just the mount — you also need to make sure the wall itself is strong enough to support the TV. Some walls, like those made of plasterboard (drywall), are particularly thin. In those cases, you’ll need special screws, or anchors. If your TV is especially heavy, support beams can be added behind plasterboard walls to ensure the necessary load-bearing capacity.
Other types of walls can be quite porous. Before mounting a TV, always check the condition and construction type of the wall. It would be frustrating if the TV didn’t hold securely on the first try and you had to try mounting it again. Read more about how to hang a TV on a cavity wall here!
