This is what you need to know when mounting your TV on a wall

Step-by-step plan for mounting your TV on a wall

Want to mount your TV safely and securely? Then there is only one solution: using a TV mount to mount your television on a wall. But what does that involve? Is your wall strong enough to mount a TV? What materials do you need? And how exactly do you go about it? You can find all the answers here. We are happy to share with you how to install your TV safely and securely on any wall.

*Please note: The tips on this page have been compiled with the greatest care. Nevertheless, if you want to be sure to achieve the safest results, please contact a professional and/or a specialist shop.

Step 1: Determining the type of wall

TV wall mount solutions various walls | Vogel's

In principle, you can mount a Vogel's TV mount and your television on any wall. But each type of wall has certain properties that need to be taken into account. That means it is important to know which materials were used to build the wall.

You can find the various types of wall that are typically used in Western European homes here.

Tip: There is often stucco, wallpaper or a layer of paint on the wall. Follow these steps to find out which type of wall you have. Drill a number of holes next to each other in a place that is out of sight. For example, behind a cupboard or painting. Or take down a skirting board. The holes allow you to quickly see what kind of wall you have without causing too much damage!

Step 2: Choosing the right materials to install your TV mount

Tips for mounting tv to the wall | Vogel's

The mounting materials you need to securely install your TV mount depends on the type of wall you have. You can read what you need for the different types of walls below.

2.1. Mounting your TV on a brick or concrete wall

COMFORT, Sustainable packaging | Vogel's

Is the wall made of concrete or completely of bricks? In that case, you can get on with installing your Vogel's wall mount straight away! The packaging for your Vogel's wall mount contains all the screws and plugs you need to install your TV mount on a full (sand-lime) brick or concrete wall. Fischer brand plugs are supplied. They are the renowned specialists. With safety as the top priority, of course!

Want to quickly move on with the installation? Take a look at these handy tips:

Drilling tips:

  • Using a hammer drill or impact drill is ideal.

  • Pre-drill the holes with a smaller sized drill bit than necessary.

  • Clean the drill holes with a vacuum cleaner

  • Only then should you drill at the indicated thickness of the drill bit.

  • Clean it again with the vacuum cleaner in order to optimise the grip of the plug.

Mounting tips:

2.2. Mounting your TV on a plasterboard wall

Can I mount my TV on a plasterboard wall or a hollow wall?

We get this question a lot, and the answer is yes! You can safely mount your TV on a hollow wall made of plasterboard. However, there are a number of factors to take into account.

Hollow walls are usually constructed from metal studs or a wooden framework. You cannot mount a TV on the plasterboard itself, but you can mount it on the metal studs or wooden frame. Is there a safe and easy way of doing that? We explain step-by-step in this special instructional page:

2.3. Mounting your TV on a plasterboard wall or dot & dab wall

Has the plasterboard been attached to the wall using plasterboard adhesive? In that case, you are dealing with a dot & dab wall. This means that you need to drill extra deep. You will also need extra-long screws. It is important to use plugs and screws that are suitable for this type of wall.

The plugs and screws needed differ from the materials supplied by Vogel's. You will need to arrange for these plugs and screws yourself. We recommend using Rigifix with M8 x 30 hexagon socket head bolts and M8 x 30 washers, also on the back of the wall plate. If in doubt, ask at your local DIY store.

Does your wall have a thick layer of plaster? That needs to be taken into account. A thick layer of plaster is not the same as a brick wall. Always contact a specialist in a DIY store in this case.

2.4. Mounting your TV on a cellular concrete wall

Is the wall on which you wish to mount your TV made of cellular concrete, aerated concrete or Ytong blocks? Then you should take the following into account:

  • Minimum wall thickness 100 mm.

  • Also check the minimum quality of the aerated concrete present. It must be G4/600 (compressive strength 4 N/mm2, volume weight < 600 kg/m3).

  • Vogel's recommends using Fischer Duopower 10 x 80 mm plugs with 8 x 90 screws. These are not included with any Vogel's product.

  • Do not set your drill in the hammer or impact drill position.

  • Pre-drill the holes with a smaller sized drill bit than necessary, which will produce better results.

  • Clean the drill holes with a vacuum cleaner for a better grip of the plug.

  • Only then should you drill at the indicated thickness of the drill bit and don't forget to clean the holes again with the vacuum cleaner.

2.5. Mounting your television on a perforated or hollow brick wall

Will your TV be mounted on a perforated or hollow brick wall? In this case, the wall will require extra reinforcement. To insure a safe installation, it is important for the load to be distributed across a larger part of the wall.

The stud adaptor from Vogel's. This adaptor provides hollow walls with the extra reinforcement needed and is the perfect fit for our best-selling COMFORT wall mounts. As an alternative to the stud adaptor, you can also reinforce the wall by attaching a thick wooden plate to the wall, for example.

Other installation tips:

  • Vogel's recommends Fischer Duopower 10 x 80 mm plugs with 8 x 90 screws in combination with a Vogel's adaptor or reinforcing plate.

  • Do not set your drill in the hammer or impact drill position.

  • For better accuracy: Pre-drill the holes with a smaller sized drill bit than necessary.

  • Clean the drill holes with a vacuum cleaner for a better grip of the plug.

  • Only then should you drill at the indicated thickness of the drill bit and don't forget to vacuum the holes again.

2.6. Mounting your TV on a hollow concrete block or masonry block wall

Is your wall made of hollow concrete blocks, brickwork blocks or ceramic blocks? You should take the following into account before installing your Vogel's wall mount and your TV:

  • The mounting materials supplied by Vogel's can be used. However, we recommend using Fischer Duopower 10 x 80 mm plugs with 8 x 90 screws for this type of wall.

  • Do not set your drill in the hammer or impact drill position.

  • For greater accuracy, pre-drill the holes with a smaller sized drill bit than necessary.

  • Clean the drill holes with a vacuum cleaner for a better grip of the plug.

  • Only then should you drill at the indicated thickness of the drill bit and don't forget to vacuum the holes again.

Is the type of wall you have not included here? You can always contact a local DIY store for advice. Take pictures and make a note of the total weight of your TV and TV mount.

Step 3: Choosing the right Vogel's TV mount

No matter what kind of wall you have, first choose a Vogel's wall mount that is suitable for your TV. That's the most important thing. Vogel's wall mounts are suitable for any type of wall. This is true regardless of whether you choose a full motion TV mount or a regular mount.

Why choose a Vogel's TV wall mount?

During the design process, Vogel's carefully considers the forces that are exerted on a TV, the TV mount and the plugs in the wall. This is then reflected in the design, the quality of the materials, the number of pivot points and the solid wall plate.
