The ideal distance from the couch to the TV is an individual question that depends on many factors. Either the person's eyesight determines how close or far away from the TV they should be. Or other factors such as room size and television size determine the viewing distance. Personal perception is also important. In this article, we have summarised the key criteria to help you decide.
There is a simple formula that can be used to calculate the ideal distance between the TV and the couch or armchair. The decisive factor for the calculation is the size of the screen diagonal (TV size) in centimetres.
To give you concrete examples to help you plan your living room or bedroom and decide on a TV size, we have calculated the distances for the most common sizes.
Please note: All figures are estimated average values and may vary in individual cases.
The following table shows the optimum distance for the most common TV sizes. If your TV size is not included, we will show you how to calculate the ideal viewing distance to the TV.

The recommended distance to a TV depends on the resolution, screen size and viewing angle. Higher resolutions such as 4K or 8K make it possible to sit closer to the TV without any loss of quality. With larger screens, the viewer should sit further away to be able to see the full picture. Modern displays such as OLED and QLED offer better viewing angles and colours, making the distance more flexible.
Even if the latest technology and advertising are very tempting, you are not doing yourself any favours by buying a television that is not suitable for your living space. All too often, televisions are bought that are supposed to fit into the home but in reality turn out to be too big or too small.
So if you are currently looking for a new TV, you should not be swayed by the living room displays you see in the shops. It's best to measure your room and plan exactly where the appliance should stand or hang and how much space is available between the TV and the sofa, armchair or bed. For small flats, small televisions are generally recommended due to the limited space available.
Also consider how you want to hang or position the television. Should it be free-standing in the room on a stand or mounted on the wall using a TV wall bracket? Are you planning to purchase a fixed mount or should the device be swivelling and rotatable?
With the innovative TV mounts from Vogel's, you can position your TV flexibly and adjust the distance to suit your individual needs.
Whether swivelling, tilting or fully movable - Vogel's offers a variety of mounting solutions that allow you to achieve the ideal viewing distance and angle in any room.
If you treat yourself to a large television, you want to present the set in the best possible light. TV stands, which can be positioned anywhere in the room, offer a particularly high degree of flexibility when it comes to positioning the TV at variable distances.
Wall mounts, on the other hand, take up less space, allowing you to mount your device flat on the wall like a painting or to be more flexible in its orientation with a swivelling and rotating mount.
In addition to the distance, the optimum angle at which the screen is viewed is also important. If you mount a large television on the wall, you may find it uncomfortable to look at the picture at an angle. Depending on the quality and technology of the TV, the display of (dark) colours may suffer if the viewing angle is too oblique. Tilting and swivelling wall mounts are a good choice for changing the angle of your TV. A particularly convenient option is electrically swivelling brackets, which allow you to set the optimum position at the right distance and angle without having to get up.
