The ideal distance from the couch to the TV is an individual question that depends on many factors. Either the person's eyesight determines how close or far away from the TV they should be. Or other factors such as room size and television size determine the viewing distance. Personal perception is also important. In this article, we have summarised the key criteria to help you decide.
Select TV viewing distance based on TV size
There is a simple formula that can be used to calculate the ideal distance between the TV and the couch or armchair. The decisive factor for the calculation is the size of the screen diagonal (TV size) in centimetres.
To give you concrete examples to help you plan your living room or bedroom and decide on a TV size, we have calculated the distances for the most common sizes.

The impact of technology on distance to a TV
The recommended distance to a TV depends on the resolution, screen size and viewing angle. Higher resolutions such as 4K or 8K make it possible to sit closer to the TV without any loss of quality. With larger screens, the viewer should sit further away to be able to see the full picture. Modern displays such as OLED and QLED offer better viewing angles and colours, making the distance more flexible.
The right distance and the optimum TV size depend on the room
Even if the latest technology and advertising are very tempting, you are not doing yourself any favours by buying a television that is not suitable for your living space. All too often, televisions are bought that are supposed to fit into the home but in reality turn out to be too big or too small.
So if you are currently looking for a new TV, you should not be swayed by the living room displays you see in the shops. It's best to measure your room and plan exactly where the appliance should stand or hang and how much space is available between the TV and the sofa, armchair or bed. For small flats, small televisions are generally recommended due to the limited space available.
Also consider how you want to hang or position the television. Should it be free-standing in the room on a stand or mounted on the wall using a TV wall bracket? Are you planning to purchase a fixed mount or should the device be swivelling and rotatable?
