Tips for cable management

What to do with your cables after mounting your TV?

Even in this age, with electronics and home automation technologies becoming more and more intuitive and user-friendly, we still face the familiar problem of concealing all of those cables. But there are various practical and attractive ways of hiding your TV cables. This helps you relax and enjoy your favourite series in a tidy living room.

Check out our cable management tips below, which will hopefully point you in the right direction!

What kinds of cables are we talking about?

HDMI cables

The well-known HDMI cable provides a digital audio and video connection from your equipment to your TV. Examples of equipment that connects to your TV via an HDMI cable include:

  • Mediabox

  • Receiver

  • Apple TV

  • Game console (e.g. X-box or Playstation)

UTP cables

A UTP cable is useful for connecting your equipment to the internet. Especially if you often use streaming services. Examples include your Smart TV, Apple TV or network receiver.

Coax cables

In many cases, a coax cable is used to connect your TV and/or set-top box to your cable TV network.

1. Trying to conceal cables in an existing building?

Here's a simple way it can be done...

Do you live in an existing building? Then there's a good chance that the power outlets are not in the ideal place for your TV. A practical, easy and quick solution is a surface-mounted cable cover.

It is very useful to have a wide cable cover placed in the wall behind where the TV will be and where your media box will be located. Nowadays, there are wide, square designs that you can cover neatly with plasterwork.

It is also possible to use a PVC tube of a suitable size for this. This can come out of the wall at a 90 degree angle at both ends.

Tip: use an end cap during installation to prevent the holes from being sealed with plaster.

2. Electrical system not yet installed?

If your electrical system has not yet been installed, we recommended first working out how many devices need to be connected to the outlet. Don't forget that USB-powered equipment (which is becoming increasingly common) is also equipped with a power adapter. It is also possible to use a multi-socket extension cord, of course. But this means that you have even more cables to conceal!

3. Sufficient power outlets? Behind the TV as well?

Are you virtually certain that your TV needs to be mounted in a fixed position on the wall? Then placing an outlet directly behind the TV is a convenient solution. This means that you don't have to route the TV's electrical cable through a cable cover. Make sure that the TV does not have any protrusions at outlet height, otherwise it may be difficult to use the outlet.

In addition, it is also useful to know what kind of TV mount you intend to purchase. It may be that the hole pattern for the TV bracket is in the centre. In which case, the power outlet needs to be located in a different position!

Tip: have you considered making a 'cable plan'? Making an outline of your potential set-up provides an overview and simplifies your cable management.

Elegant aluminium cable cover

Even though a range of exterior covers to conceal cables are widely available, they are usually made of plastic. These cable covers are not only flimsy, but are difficult to secure to walls, especially when you have plaster walls.

When installing a TV on a mount, one of the main issues is hiding the TV cables from view. This is one of the aspects we take into account when developing our TV mounts.

Our solution is to equip our full-motion TV mounts with the Cable Inlay System (CIS®), Vogel's patented cable routing system. With this system, rather than travelling along the arms, the cables pass through the support arms from the wall to your TV. As a result, the cables are both invisible and well protected.

SIGNATURE TV mount

With our best-selling SIGNATURE DesignMount and the motorised TV Wall Mount SIGNATURE MotionMount, a cover plate for the back of your TV is included as a standard. Both of the SIGNATURE TV mounts feature special cable holders, allowing you to store up to 4 metres of cable behind the cover plate.
